Orchids are the embodiment of the times: reward without effort. A scrap of exoticism on the kitchen table, the hasty pleasure of a last-minute gift, potted bling. No doubt orchids awaken in me my most visceral reactionary urges.

And yet, the spiranthes remain, with nothing to offer this era of gluttony.

The autumn one, whose blue-grey foliage never fails to wrench from me a soft dirge of melancholy.
Or the summer one, with its lighter, more cheerful spiral.

Through the lens, they reveal that same beaded texture upon their petals and sepals.
Each bead is a cell.
Have you ever seen a cell?
